Something that most of us have dealt with at some point is the subject of regression. Our child develops a new skill, triggering feelings of pride and hope, only to apparently ‘lose’ a skill they have had for some time.

This, far from being a step backward, could be giving out children the necessary time and emotional space in order to develop their new skill.

Although it is undoubtedly frustrating, and could last for months, it is likely that regressing to a stage in their development that was more comfortable for them, could pave the way for the confidence needed to develop their skills. A potty trained child regressing to soiling themselves, a weaned child suddenly demanding a bottle, a verbal child becoming non verbal, this list is endless, but if you can bear in mind the necessity of this, it can help to ease the frustration that it can cause.
